Her Honor's Bodyguard by Johnny Ray (Guest Post)

My guest today is Johnny Ray, the author of Her Honor's Bodyguard. If you are a fan of romantic thrillers, you might want to check out his book. Here is Johnny to tell you a little more about it.

HER HONOR'S BODYGUARD

About the Book:

Do first loves ever really die? While reunions can take many forms, there is always one question that has to be answered sooner or later—what happened?

Vance had always been extremely proud of Noella, and just because his life had been ruined, he saw no reason why she had to have the same faith. When his dad died, leaving him and his mother penniless, he dropped out of law school and ended his relationship with Noella, but in doing so, he stopped a scandal that could have ruined her family. These secrets he would never let her know. Ironically, years later, he would have never guessed she would be instrumental in ruining his career with the Tampa police force

After Noella finished law school and started pursuing her goal of working up the ranks in judgeships, she never considered inviting another guy into her life. As such, when someone attempts to threaten her into vacating her seat on the bench, and by force if necessary, she knows of no one else she really trust as much as Vance, who now has a successful bodyguard and private detective business.

She knows that Vance might hate her for her part in having him dismissed from the police force, but what he will never know is that she actually saved him from going to prison. Additionally, she now thinks he was framed, and perhaps by the same people who are threatening her. She had to talk him into taking her on as a client . . . but would he agree to her request?

As the number of attacks on her life increases, Vance soon has no choice but to offer her his protection, and in spite of everything, when they see each other again their old attraction for each other returns. She wants the truth. He wants the truth. However, making the ultimate sacrifice is not always easy to understand, whether given or received. Ultimately . . . could they now trust each other with these secrets? While their lives depend on discovering the truth to their past, these truths are locked in deep secrets that could also destroy them.

THE CHALLENGES OF
MERGING A ROMANCE AND A THRILLER
BY
JOHNNY RAY
THE MASTER OF THE ROMANTIC THRILLER

All writers have an obvious major problem when working with two very separate genres. While a romance has a certain story arc, a thriller has a completely different one. The endings are totally different. The characters are unique to both. In reality, there s very little they share in common except telling a damn good story.

Acknowledging that an equal mixture of both will almost never work, many writers tend to go with one more part dominating the story. The story could be a romance with thrilling elements, or a thriller with romantic elements. This might sound like a small change, but it is major is the way the author needs to approach the story.

To start the explanation let us start with the romance, which always promises the happy ever after ending.  Most readers want the fantasy, the hope, the dream of such a perfect life. They love to see the struggle in getting there and overcoming obstacles. The growth of the characters and the internal conflict is a major key in writing a great romance. While a plot is good to have, it is not the major part of a romance.

In a thriller, the writer has major flexibility in the ending. It could be happy or sad, or anything in between. The plot is the major part of the story and the characters are simply there to move the story forward. In a thriller, the arc has to be up and down throughout the story, but in each case the level of intensity has to rise significantly. The ending has to be the major climax in the novel.
With such diversity in the stories, how do you combine the two? In short, how to you romance your sweetie and avoid bullets, etc at the same time? Making the situation real takes dedication and the ability to shift gears seamlessly. In the difficulty it presents, it also offers a great way to expand both the romance and the thriller, and is why I love to write them.

Those golden moments when the characters can relax, they also can find themselves and the people around them, including someone special. It presents the perfect way to calm the run of explosive plotting, and to give the reader time to breathe. This, in turn, offers another chance to wretch up the action of the thriller.

If you have never read romantic thrillers I invite you to try some. Forget what you have learned before and keep your mind open to something new. It is not a romance. It is not a thriller. It is a romantic thriller. If you would like to check out my work, please go to my Amazon page athttp://www.amazon.com/Johnny-Ray/e/B0059G01XQ .
