What If by Kelly Rae

What if...

About the Book:

“Katie, are you listening to me?” Chris demanded with a stomp of his feet, like a child.

“Chris, I don’t believe you, I know what I saw. Don’t treat me like a fool I’m… ” Just then a mixed color of lights were projected onto the house and Katie turned to see a Sheriff car pulling into the driveway, headlights on with red and white lights flashing but no sound. When the Deputy got out of the car, her knees gave out and she just about hit the deck. He was here for her, she could feel it down the pit of her stomach. Chris had been right behind her and caught Katie before she fell to the ground. Katie was screaming stop, go away, and in her head but nothing was coming out of her mouth. She closed her eyes, willing the scene to be different when she opened them again. She felt like a small child hiding from the boogieman, if she couldn’t see the Deputy then he couldn’t see her, right? She would open her eyes to find him gone in five, four, three, two…

“Katie, are you ok?” Chris was yelling at her, for how long she couldn’t be sure. She opened her eyes and there was the Deputy, almost right in front of her now. Her mouth wasn’t working; her throat felt dry and closed up, swollen like a bad sore throat but with no pain. Numb.

Sometimes in life we know things. Instantly. A sound, a smell, or just a feeling in the pit of our stomachs alert us to changes in life’s vibrations that we cannot understand on an intellectual level: they are intuitions. For Katie, this means she knows exactly what’s happened to her father before the Deputy tells her, knows he’s been in an accident, and knows it’s not okay. In fact, she knows it’s far from okay. After her visit to his bedside at the hospital that night, she will never see him alive again—the first man she ever loved. And after her father’s funeral she is determined to never again see Chris Staller either—the first boy she ever loved.

Fast-forward ten years and Katie is now a beautiful, successful, and driven woman in her late-twenties. But her father’s death and Chris’ betrayal have clouded every relationship she has had since that night. From potential romantic partners to her closest friends, she has kept everyone around her from getting too close. Working through these intimacy issues while maintaining a stellar career reputation, however, has been a challenge—but challenges are Katie’s lifeblood. She rises to every occasion and always comes out on top.

When Katie pays a visit to her old high school, however, she runs into Chris, now a dedicated PE teacher who pines for the one he let get away: her. An upstanding member of the community and a much better man than he was a boy, Chris is determined to win Katie back at all cost. But Katie is less than receptive to the idea, and when he lays down a challenge, she is determined to come out on top again.

Guest Blog: Why I Write Romance

There are people that I meet who visibly cringe when I say I write romance novels. Usually they will say, “You mean like Fabio romances?” with a tone that insinuates they are not impressed. To which I reply, “Well no, not exactly, but they are love story and yes they contain sex.” I suppose what they are visualizing is a book with a half-naked man and a woman being ravaged on the cover. What If… my current release does not resemble this, however I certainly won’t be ruling it out as a possible choice. I’m not scared of a little ravaging, after all.

I write romances and while I don’t let my son, who is nine, or my Dad read every page of my books I sure want everyone else too. So, to those who ask why am I wasting my time and brain writing trivial romance novels, I say why wouldn’t I?

Love is the best part of life. Falling in love can be better than being in love, in some instances. It’s all pretty amazing though. Why wouldn’t I want to write about meeting someone new, trying to navigate dates and moving in and then marriage at some point? Of course, there are break-ups and divorce in the mix, but that is just a part of life and it all leads to another chance to find and fall in love. Love leads to kids, families, and bonds that last forever. These are all the good things in life, aren’t they? I write about the heart of life, love. How awesome is that!?

Then, of course, there is the romance factor. Everyone wants to be wooed, even men. Sure, it’s not sustainable all of the time, in most relationships. However, in books, it can happen over and over. In books, men bring flowers, even when they aren’t in trouble. J In books women are sometimes damsels in distress and sometimes strong-willed and stubborn, but men are patient and kind and they hardly ever disappoint. So, when our husbands or boyfriends are in a romantic lull or we are single for a bit; what is better than a romance novel to remind us why we put up with their stinky feet, their inability to locate the hamper or a local flower shop, on a regular basis!!

I write my books, because I want to write about hope, love, romance, and finding that person (or persons if you are into some of the more risqué romance J ) who makes every day better. It’s not only entertaining, but also uplifting to read about love. It’s something you can never get enough of or give enough of, so YES I write smutty and hot (under the name Jocelyn Bell); sexy and romantic, sweet and funny, contemporary and eventually historical ROMANCE NOVELS! Heck, if I had a rooftop I’d shout it for ya!

Moreover, Romance readers I love you for supporting writers, for buying books, and writing reviews on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or telling a friend about the great book they have to buy. Thank you for not being afraid to fly your freak flag from tame to insane amongst the genre. I love romance and I know you all do too!
